Mod means ⌘ Cmd on macOS and Ctrl on Windows/Linux.

Note

Subscript and superscript are Mod+Shift+, / . rather than the bare versions other editors use, because Mod+, opens Settings — the convention on every platform, and worth more than a chord for two marks a novel uses twice.

Turning a block into something else

Works on the block the cursor is in, or on every selected block.

Tip

Moving a block stops at the ends of its section rather than jumping into the next chapter — a paragraph that slipped into the previous chapter because you held the chord one press too long is a hard edit to notice.

Tip

Exit break is handy when your cursor is inside a table, code block, or callout and you want to keep writing a normal paragraph below it.

Note

The project sidebar is Mod+Shift+B rather than the plain Mod+B other apps use, because that one is bold in the editor and stays that way.

Search

Tip

Mod+F finds inside whatever you are looking at: the text of a document in the editor, and the nodes or beats of a mindmap or an outline on those surfaces. On a canvas the matches stay lit and everything else dims, and the arrows beside the box step through them in the order the story runs.

These work wherever a page is listed — sidebar items, page links inside a document, search, the Library, relationships and cards. In the project database, where Ctrl+Click selects rows, use the menu under a row’s icon. Inside a document and in search, ⌘ Cmd works in place of Ctrl on macOS.

Tip

Hover a tab and its icon turns into a back arrow — the same step back as the shortcut, for whichever tab you point at.

Markdown as you type

Type the marker and a space. Whatever follows the cursor comes along into the new block.

The marker a list is drawn with comes from the project’s list preset, not from what you typed — so a. makes an ordered list, drawn with whatever “Symbol Style” that project uses. Change the marker in the block-style panel, where it applies everywhere at once.

Note

Mod+N makes a note, not a manuscript. A manuscript takes a place in the Act / Chapter / Scene tree, and a shortcut should not pick one for you — those are made from the sidebar.
